No matter what you are planning on playing percussion-wise, you need to learn and practice your rudiments. I would suggest picking up Dr. John Wooton's "Rudimental Reference Book." It will give you tips on how to hold the sticks and help you with your rudiments. The rudiments are the building blocks to all rythms.

Remember to take everything at a slower tempo. While you're buying the book, i would reccomend buying a metronome, drum pad, and a pair of sticks. If you are wanting to practice for marching either buy Ralph Hardimon wood-tipped or just a pair of 5-A's. Or for drumset or orchestral music, buy a pair of 7-A's.
