How can i predict how fast severe storms are moving?

  1. I don't know where you are but down in the New Orleans area and most of the midwest states we have Doppler radar which is usually found on your local tv news station weather section. Learn to understand the Doppler system. Watch out for the bow echoes.. that usually means tornadic activity. Whenever we have thunderstorm activity I can guage how close the storm is by counting between the strike and the thunder.. has always worked. Count 1001, 1002, 1003, etc. For each 1005, it means 1 mile. If the counts get further apart the storm is moving away. Now that is an old fogies way of doing it but it has always worked. But your best bet is to just watch the doppler and tune into your local weather channel.

  3. Check the time as some feature of the storm passes a particular point - say the line of heavy rain that often comes at the edge of the storm, or even just the line of dark clouds. Then get the time when the same feature passes another point some miles distant from the first one. You can probably do this from the comfort of your computer by looking at the satellite weather maps.
