  1. Check out this web site, it should help you!  Good Luck

  2. There are many things you can do to promote cognitive development, but all of them start with nurturing social relationships. any activity that is done with mutual enjoyment, smiling, kind words will be more effective than using educational toys or flash cards. children who feel secure and loved learn better than children who are merely shown a flash card or ditto page.

  3. I have a website that has great (free!) printables and activity suggestions for children of this age group.  Here is a link to the  "Learning" page.  It has the activities broken down for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, etc. http://www.quality-kids-crafts.com/learn...

Of course activities vary by age group, but I think the key is keeping children engaged in learning about their surroundings.

Do not press a child to participate in an activity that does not appeal to him or her.  Babies may repeat patty cake a few times and lose interest.  That's okay.  Move on to something new.  Same for toddlers.

Toddlers LOVE sensory experiences from splashing in water to comparing sandpaper to flannel textures.

Preschoolers love to cut with scissors.  Channel this by allowing them to have appropriate scissors and acceptable materials to cut.  This can be an old magazine, junk mail, etc. but helping a preschool child develop self-control by setting limits does wonders in preparing him or her for kindergarten.  Especially watch a younger three-year-old cut.  He or she will (generally) cut small straight lines like fringe all the way around a paper.  Older preschoolers will attempt to cut along lines.

Observing the cognitive development of young children is fascinating.  Just keep a sense of humor... and a roll of paper towels!

Free publications are available from http://edpubs.ed.gov/Default.aspx and you don't even have to pay shipping.  Just register for an account and search by age, topic, etc.

  4. Try looking on here...

    http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk

it is the new early years foundation stage and will tell you the different learning objectives for 0-3 for cognitive development I would look under: Learning and Development 4.4...then you can look at the ages you are interested in-it wil have differnet examples of practice.

    Ideas:

-Sensory stimulation (music, different smells, textures-sand, water play etc)

    -singing songs and rhymes

-mirrors-making faces...you can buy mirrors that make the reflection look funny!
