How can i protect myself?

around my neighborhood there have been some break ins and robberies. i don't have money to buy sophisticated systems and such. I always have the windows locked, car locked, and i lock the house after i leave. is there anything else i can do to help me feel more safe? i have limited means...please help

Put a security system logo sticker in your window, even with out the system robbers will think that you have a security system installed.

Years ago you could get a motion detector that hung over a doorknob. If someone tried to get in it would make a loud noise. They were sold primarily for traveler's to use in motels. Radio Shack sold them. You could check there.

Pretty good list that covers the basics and will help you get started. My particular favorite is adding thorny bushes around the premises.

find a flashing red light and turn it on at random times, and always leve the tv on, but change channels as often as possable, and switch to radio often

get a motion sensor to attach to your exterior lights. bad guys like the shadows!

There are several ways you can affordably protect yourself, but consider each very carefully.

1. Get an alarm system. Installation can run a couple hundred to install, but run about $20 a month after that. Good thing is it protects while you're away, but if someone breaks in WHILE you're home it can be scary waiting for the cops while someone rummages through your house.

2. Buy a gun/shotgun. If you have a crook coming in, nothing is more empowering than knowing you can protect yourself. Cost is about $350 or less for a decent pistol/shotgun. Just make sure you LOCK IT UP when you leave the house and PRACTICE. Take it to the range and let some loose. Don't know how familiar you are with ranges, but they're normal people there, not the militia wannabe sterotype.

3. Move to a better neighborhood.
