In his summary to the jury, Atticus says: “But there is one way in this country in which all men are created equal-there is one human institution that makes a pauper the equal of a Rockefeller, the stupid man the equal of an Einstein, and the ignorant man the equal of any college president. That institution, gentlemen, is the court.

  1. It is wrong because the court just allows you to have the best advocacy money can buy. The more money you have, probably the better lawyer you will have. Also, the jury brings with them  biases that influence their decisions, too.

  2. did you follow the O.J. trial?

  3. Although I love Atticus, the quote can be attacked on several issues.

    1) No one is guaranteed a "jury of his peers) Juries are randomly picked, and despite efforts, often have prejudices.

    2) At the time of the trial, Tom was tried before a completely white jury in a courtroom in which his own wife was forced to sit in thew balcony.

    3) Money talks. Loudly. I know the Innocence Project folks work for free, but they can only get to some. Ordinary people can't buy the expensive attorneys, the experts, and all the rest.

  4. Atticus is trying to minipulate the court into voting Tom innocent. Although he knows Tom will be voted guilty, because of his skin color, Attitus is trying to make a "hung jury" . A court should show no discrimiation, but at the time this book was set, racism was a thriving issue. Blacks had rights leaglly, but the town people still held thier opinions. So although courts see all men equal, the internal conflict of each jury member does not hold blacks equal with whites. (in this setting)

Atticus later expresses this same idea when he says that the only court that doesn't show equallity is the court in a man's heart.
