  1. You can pull the hard drive up and set it up as the 'slave' hard drive on the working computer, and if the hard drive isn't fried and you can access it from the new computer you should be able to copy the files from there.

You haven't mentioned why the computer isn't working so i'm not sure exactly what you need to do?  Is the hard drive coming on when you start it? Is there any power to it at all? Is the monitor just not coming on?

There are a lot of ways to get the files off but you'll need to give a bit more info about whats wrong first :)

  2. It depends on why the computer isnt working.  If you have hardware failure besides the computers hard drive, then you can remove the hard drive and connect it to another computer (or you can replace the hardware that failed).  Once on the other computer you should be able to browse the computers hard drive as if it were on the computer. you are using.

you may find you need to purchase a IDE/SATA -> USB adapter to connect it.  They are relatively cheap (35$ ish).  If you dont feel comfortable pulling apart your computer then you can probably get a local computer repair person to do the work for 50-200$.

If your HDD died then you can send it to a data recovery company (drive savers or something similar) and they will recover as much data as they can.  normally estimates are free and recovery starts at around 2000 but can go up to 10-20k.
