If you want a photo/custom picture as your avatar you need to make a yahoo 360 page. http://360.yahoo.com/login.html?.done=ht...

click "my page" then "edit personal photo" then browse upload and save Set as primary. and save. go to your avatar choose your avatar>preview>OK. then go to yahoo>my profile>edit my info then click use my 360 picture>preview then OK.

Some users are experiencing a problem with the 360 avatar. it can take some time to show but it will eventually so try to be be patient.

From yahoo messenger, click on "my display image". From there, select "share my picture" and simply download the picture you want to display.

go to edit your profile, hten select use your own picture or whatever it says (its the second choice), then upload your photo, and save.
