  1. yr ph should read between 5-9.5 if u were to do a rapid alteration in ph it will stress yr fish out do regular water changes this will help get yr ph levels right good luck

  2. ....ph routinely fluctuates in the wild due to various water particles, such as, tannins and mineral run-off, rainwater, clay, califerous rock, etc, etc.

...in a planted tank ph has at least a 0.5 daily flux

....in a tank with wood again 0.5 to 1.0 flux due to tannins leeching

....tap water has given ph, that will return, even after salts or bicarbonate soda is added

...if a higher ph is to be maintained, try adding 'coral gravel', which will last much longer and more consistently than buffering salts or bicarb soda

....i keep some wood in my tank as well as several cups of 'coral gravel' in my 55 gallon...they balance each other out

....i started with one cup at a time until i noted the ph steady at 6.8-7.2, and now have a nice tank balance
