  1. you have to hook up your device output (antenna cable satellite etc) to the input of the vcr. then the output of the vcr to the tv

  2. It matters what type of television of have

Some televisions have a video out which it meant to plug into a VCR or DVR, if you have one of these (it would be labeled video out), just connect the video out from your TV to the video in on the VCR, then plug the video out from your VCR to your TV's video in, switch to your video input mode and test to see if you can get your VCR on screen, and give a test recording so you know how to blindly record (record without getting onscreen cues), then switch to the channel or video input that you want to record, and press record when you are ready to record, keep in mind that you won't get those cues onscreen that tell you when it's recording, your VCR's display should tell you that you are recording though, after you finish what you want to record, switch to the video input you connected your VCR to, rewind the tape and play it back to see if you got what you wanted to record

If you do not have a video out on your TV, plug the source you want to record into your VCR and select the right channel or video mode on the VCR, then connect your VCR to your TV (if you have not dosne so already), and change to the video mode on your TV to view view the VCR, when you are ready to record what you want to record, press record, after you have finished recording, rewind to see if you gotten what you wanted to record
