  1. Richard is correct. Muriatic acid removes iron stains.

  2. Never use Any steel pads like SOS or you will only make more rust > Use a rust remover marine or home> It takes a few time but removers it> sanding only removes the gelcoat>

  3. Also another product is called Flitz. It is in a gray tube at the boating supply stores and maybe the hardware stores. It is like toothpaste and using an old toothbrush is best.

  4. Use muriatic acid, available at hardware stores like home depot.  It's very good at removing rust and leaf stains from fiberglass.  Follow the directions and use gloves and eye protection.  I KNOW IT"S ACID, but it's used every day to clean concrete etc.  Good luck!!!

  5. Listen to 45 Cal. He is correct. Do not use an abrasive or you will damage the Gel Coat.

After you get the stains off, apply a couple of heavy coats of paste wax to the area that is staining. It will prevent future rust stains.

Apply the paste wax AFTER removing the stains. If you apply the wax with the stain on the transom, you will have to remove the wax to remove the stain.

I prefer Turtle Wax Paste Wax made for cars to prevent oil and rust stains on the transom..

  6. Start with an "SOS" pad and move up to 600 wet/dry sand paper. Come back on it with a thick coat of wax.

In my defense-I can only say that I have never left Iron in gellcoat using a wash pad-I've left wet ones on the sink and had a rust deposit. Second- Show me some one who has used an acid on the bottom of the boat and I'll show you a hole in the lawn or driveway. Gelcoat is routinely repaired with wet and dry sand paper and because it is 1/16 th of a inch thick -you have to be a go-rillia to get down to the glass under neath.
