How can i remove the icon placement restrictions on the desktop?

just got a new computer, it uses xp pro.

i noticed the icons on the desktop automatically align on the left instead of staying where i place them, is their a way i can set the comp so that i can place icons anywhere?

i did it on my other comp but i cant remember how, much thanks!

on the right click the blank space on the desktop, point to arrange icon by, check if Auto arrange is chuck mark, if yes click to unchech mark it. then go back to arrange the icon the way you want it.
