  1. Just started driving a motorcycle for my commute on nice days.  I still drive my SUV on rainy or really cold days.  I used to get only about 15 MPG in my SUV but paying attention to slower starts and stops, using your momentum, keeping it tuned up, AC only when really necessary etc, I'm now getting 20-25 MPG.

My motorcycle get 65 MPG regardless.  And it's fun to ride on a beautiful day like today is here.  That said, I think I'll go for a little joyride now... I'd never do that in my SUV but the gas isn't quite the killer when you can fill up for less than $10.

    Good luck!!

  2. Put an opened zip-lock bag with the opening pointed toward you behind your butt every time you need to f**t.  Be sure to close it right away so the f**t doesn't escape!

Why do you want to save them by the way? :P

  3. try getting a tune up on your car

  4. Don't drive.

  5. Carpool, vanpool and/or take public transport when/if possible.  Avoid sudden stops and starts.  Always stay in the slow lane on expressways and go ten or fifteen mph below the posted speed.    When on city streets, look far ahead to anticipate possible stops and try to adjust your speed accordingly so that you avoid stops.

Trade your car in for a more efficient model.  A Honda

Civic will get you to work just as easily as a Suburban and uses far less gasoline to do it.

Get a tune up.  Don't run your a/c if the simple vent (air blowing but a/c off) is sufficient.  If you're driving on city streets, it's okay to keep your a/c off altogether even on hot days and just keep the windows down.  At expressway speeds though, it's better to run the a/c than to go with the windows down.  At high speeds, having the windows down will increase drag and that will, in turn, use more gas.

Keep a clean air filter on your car and change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

Combine trips.  Say, you need to go to the pharmacy, the vet, the office, Aunt Phyllis's and Hobby Lobby:  well, do them all in one trip.  In fact, stopping by a shopping center or big box store (Walmart for instance) can help a lot because you avoid 5 miles in one direction for one item and then 10 in another direction for a second item - see what I mean?

    Walk short distances, if possible.

Get a bicycle or a moped.

Finally, consider getting a diesel-fueled vehicle.  There are lots of Volkswagens out there that run on diesel.  Diesel fueled cars can run on biodiesel (which it's possible to brew at home, but you have to know what you're doing - there are kits available on the internet) using little more than waste vegetable oil from Chinese food shops and burger joints (they're usually happy to give the stuff away because otherwise they have to pay someone to take it).  Also, diesel-fueled cars can be converted to run on SVO (straight vegetable oil - which can, again be basically free).  You have to have two fuel tanks as the engine must start and be stopped using regular petroleum diesel or biodiesel (so the lines don't clog) and the SVO has to be heated (either electrically or with the waste heat from the motor) in order to be usable.

Even if you don't go the biodiesel or SVO route, are you aware that smaller diesels (like Volkswagens) get some of the best fuel mileage in America?  A diesel-fuled Jetta or Beetle averages around 50 mpg on the highway (last I checked anyway) which is nothing to sneeze at.

At home, turn down the thermostat in the winter and turn it up in the summer.  This uses less electricity which in turn burns less oil at the power plant which in turn decreases demand for said oil which in turn leads to lower prices at the fuel pump.  If you live in the South or Southwest, plant tall trees on the south side of your house to reduce your airconditioning bill (saves money AND helps reduce demand for precious oil).  In the North, also plant trees on the south side of your house, but make sure they're not evergreens.  Evergreens do great at keeping your house cooler in the summer, but in the winter, you want the sun to assist your heating system.  A tree which sheds its leaves in the fall is the best of both worlds.

  6. Well aside from the obvious (drive less, carpool, public transportation), there are a few things you can keep in mind while driving to help improve fuel mileage.

    1)  Proper maintenance.  Keeping up with oil changes, alignments, tire changes, air filter changes, plug changes, fuel system maintenance, etc. will help keep your car operating optimally.  This will help increase your gas mileage.  Here's a good question:  Have you checked your tire pressure lately?

    2)  Windows up!  Having windows down increases drag on the car.  Increased drag will decrease gas mileage.  This also applies to things like driving with the top down in a convertible, opening the sunroof, using travel bins ski racks or bike racks, etc.

    3)  Clean out the junk.  If you have an SUV, truck, or just a bigger car and leave that junk in the trunk, that extra weight hurts your fuel efficiency.  Every little bit counts right?

    4)  Using A/C hurts as well.  Using the A/C will drain power from the drivetrain since the compressor is run off of the accessory belt.  While using the A/C is better for fuel mileage than putting the windows down, if you're not really that hot, turn it off for a while.

    5)  Don't drive with a lead foot.  Hard, quick acceleration is worse for gas mileage than easy, smooth acceleration.  Don't take off from those stoplights and stopsigns like a drag racer.  Just accelerate smoothly up to speed.  Also, typically, you'll get the best gas mileage on the highway crusing between 55mph and 65mph depending on your transmission size and type.  Any faster and you'll be using more gas to overcome the natural drag forces of the air.

    Just some tips to help.

  7. for best mileage, drive with traffic, keep up with the slow lane and don't cause a blockage.  you'll get good mileage following traffic, you let off alot.  the biggest thing you can do is your driving style, you get twice the mileage slowing down and triple going down hill, so the sooner you let off the gas the better you will do. anticipate stop signs and lights, left off the gas as soon as you can..

Always use your od, if you don't have one, put on 2 size larger tires on the drive wheels and remember to figure a correction for mileage.  you can check it against a gps to find it..

it really helps if you have a car with a mileage computer so you can watch it...

  8. stop driving. ride a bicycle. lol
