  1. get shut of the nag

  2. shoot the horse and sell it to the pie factory

  3. I can only speak about hay and straw for certain, but I do know the same bale will cost a farmer up to 75% less than a pony owner. They know you will pay over the odds.

Out sourcing your basics and keeping them under lock and key saves a fortune, (posh people steal hay  :0)

  4. Help around the barn and you might get some off!

  5. is there no way you can go on half livery and do the mucking out yourself? If not - could you talk to the yard owner and ask her would she be prepared to drop the bill price if you were to work around the yard for her? Maybe offer to do the feeds on the weekend or something like that?

    xx

  6. you could change your livery...

if you keep him/her at a riding stables you could put them on working livery, where the horse can be used in riding lessons in exchange for a cheaper livery.

if possible theres part livery - the yard do some things for you eg maybe feed in the morning and turnout and you do other things, you would have to confirm what as it varies, again this will lower your bill more than full livery.

diy livery - you do everything all you pay for is the paddock and stable sometimes starw may be included etc...vey cheap.

if you cant change your livery find somebody tho loves to ride but cant have a horse of their own they could pay say £20 a week to you and be able to ride the horse on 3 days..this way you get money towards upkeep and also get the horse exersised and possibly some stable chores! theres always a competent teenager willing to do this.

    hope this helps :)

  7. Some yards will lower your bills if they can use your horse in riding lessons (this is only if it's a riding school as well!) You could also consider putting your horse on part loan, where someone (like me) who can't afford to buy a horse takes on half of the responsibility of livery, feed, shoeing, and insurance bills etc as well as exercising and mucking out.  If you can find someone who can commit to muck out, turn out etc you might get away with part livery.

Make sure you draw up a contract with anyone you loan your horse too, so that it keeps you both right, and both of you know what is expected.

  8. I have a girl come up twice a week to ride one of mine, she pays some money every time. Means I get some extra money, and he gets exercised.

Could you not put him on a part or DIY livery?

Umm.. Yoou could also offer to do other peoples horses up the yard, and they could pay you, to help you pay for your livery

  9. If your loan agreement says he has to be on full livery there's not much you can do about it. You could have his shoes off that would save a bit, very few people ride enough to really need shoes. Or you could offer to help with someone elses horse who has more money and less time than you if they pay a bit of your fees. Does it have to be full livery? If you 'do' him yourself at weekends even that will help reduce costs
