  1. I have also had alot of trouble getting my budgies to eat anything other than their seed- although its recommended that they get fruit and veggies in their diet you must have to start them at a really early age because all of mine have been too scared to try!

You can try putting some different seedy grasses in the cage (provided they're not poisonous)- most birds LOVE chewing them up and it definately adds some greens to their diet.

Definately buy food in bulk- but make sure the food is appropriate. They should only be having small parrot seeds. Bird seed is specially formulated for different types and sizes of bird and eating the wrong food can make them sick.

We use a chicken feeder in our budgie aviary which gets topped up a couple of times a week- works well and we dont seem to spend too much on seed.

  2. Buy larger quantities when buy your seed.  You can get 50 pounds of wild birdseed for 13.00 at Walmart.. Then you can buy little portions of  other seeds from a feed and supply store to add into the wild bird seed.  You can also try broccoli, leafy green lettuce, wheat grass sold in produce departments at grocery stores in small pots, scrambled eggs.

Remember Parakeets hull their seeds leaving just the shells.so it may look like they still have seed, but it is gone.

  3. A lot of times they just throw half of it out of the bowl. We used to take it outside after they were done and blow the shucks out and save the good seed and give it to them again. Other wise they are very waste full

  4. If you are asking this question you have too many birds.  Why not sell a few and buy more food?

They should not be on an all seed diet.  That they finish it in 10 minutes means they are hungry.  You do not want hungry birds.

Start introducing them to healthy food by clipping a dark green leaf of swiss chard or similar salad green to the inside of the cage.  They will love it and it will give them vitamin A which they need.  Shred carrots and offer them carrots, chopped celery and chopped cooked pasta first thing in the morning.  An hour later give them the seeds mixed with the vegie mix.  You must feed them more than seeds and vegies are so good for them.  I recommend two containers for 9 birds, not one.

  5. first off, DO NOT GIVE WILD BIRD SEED to parakeets. they need parakeet food and fruits and veggies. not all pet birds will eat fresh foods. my guys don't really like it and that's ok. there are all kinds of supplements out there that can give them the vitamins and minerals they need that bird seed mixes don't have. i have used the Kaytee brand food for years. i recently switched the the Eight-in-One brand called Ecotrition. both of these you can get at petsmart.

birds should have access to food and water 24 hours a day. i give all my birds and brand new bowl once a week. i check it everyday of course. i shake of what has been eaten and add more if they need it.

plus, they will throw their food. it's not to make a mess on purpose it's so that they can get to what they want in their bowl. you try eating  food with no hands...you would make a mess too!

it's not about saving money really, it's about prioritizing your money. if you can, find a local pet store that sells parakeet food by the pound out of a bin. usually it is a little less money that way if you buy in bulk.
