  1. I don't know if you tried printing at home or at a store, but what happened is that your image was likely magnified to fit the paper size. If you are at home, you can change your print settings to print at original size.  Another possibility is that you scanned your photo at a real high resolution so that the image was significantly larger than 3x4 in the end.

    What to do:

If you really want it at 3x4, here's what to do.

    1) Scan your photo at 300DPI

    2) In any photo editing software, open a new file set to 4x6 inches

    3) "import" or "place" your scanned image into that file.

    4) If necessary, scale your image to 3x4 in the window and align it to the left. It should take up only half the space (it's 3in instead of 6in)

    5) Save the file and send it to your preferred print shop for printing.

    6) Cut off the blank three inches and keep the 3x4 photo.

Stores have their machines set to print at 4x6 so if you want to retain the original size, you need to do some editing.

Of course, you can increase the scan resolution to make an enlargement. 5x7 will have the closest aspect ratio.  For a quality 5x7 enlargement from 3x4, increase your scan resolution to 500DPI.
