How can i search my dad for free?

I dont know my dad, and i asked permission by my mother and asked if i could trace him but is there anyway round finding him rather then spending money?

I suppose that would depend on how much you already know regarding his whereabouts.  If you have his full name and the city (or at least the state), you could probably run a whitepages.com search and you'd probably get an accurate hit if he's listed.

If not, you may actually need to use a pay service.  The ones online aren't that expensive as long as you use it and cancel once you've tracked him down.  You may at that point only incur a one-month charge.

I used to work in skiptracing to find people that didn't want to be found and some good sites for that include lexis nexis.  But again, it's a pay site, so try whitepages.com first and see if that gives you enough info to locate him.

It's also helpful to have his date of birth and social security number.  If he and your mother ever filed taxes jointly, you can find his SSN on the tax form.

It depends on how much information you have already.

You need to create a file and record everything that you do know.

His name - full name - middle name if you know it.

His date of birth - or even the year of birth will help

Where he was born

Where he lived/grew up

Where his last known address was

Brothers, sister's names

Parents names

Place of work

School/college/university

Interests

When you have compiled all this start by a simple google check with his name and the area he lived...

Move on to checking things like Friends Reunited...see if he is listed under his old school or college.

Run his name in a 'facebook' search

In the UK you can search for him on 192.com

You can also search for him on ancestry.com

If this fails, you can start searching using his brothers or sisters names....even his parents names....

Ask some of his family where he is if u talk to them. If you know what city he lived in then look through the phone book.Your family is the best thing you can have for searching, because they usually know the most.

In the UK, the Salvation Army I guess.  They have a pretty good record in this field of finding people.  I still think they charge though, even if it is a nominal fee.  Doing this without spending any money at all is asking a lot.  An awful lot.

Theres things you can try if you have a name and a rough location.  It obviously helps if you have a middle name too, especially for common names like Jones or Smith.  The two most usual options are to search either the electoral roll or the phone book, but neither method is foolproof, and both cost money to buy credits, search and view results.  Looking in the phone book obviously assumes that (a) he has a landline and (b) he isn't ex-directory.  Searching the electoral roll again assumes that (a) he is registered to vote and (b) he hasn't "opted out" of the online roll as if he has you won'tfind him this way either.  The odds aren't great.  They would perhaps be better if he was a doctor or a solicitor or something as his name or business might crop up in a google search.  If you knew for example that "John Smith" was a builder from Leeds, then you might at least have a chance of tracing him through his business address and/or website, assuming he trades under his own name.  There are options for sure, but not many of them are free.
