  1. Other than using the 3rd party services that translate your emails into faxes, your options are otherwise using VoIP.

Any VoIP service that supports G.711a/u codec will typically be able to transport fax transmissions, directly using your fax machine directly connected to a VoIP ATA adapter.

Best reliability is to have a ATA that also supports the T.38 codec, which is specifically designed for fax transmissions over Internet, via VoIP services.  If T.38 codec isn't available, then G.711a/u codec is alternate.  No other VoIP Codecs will be able to handle fax transmissions because the compression algorithms do not reliably replicate the fax signals.

Linksys has VoIP ATA's that support T.38 and G.711 codecs.

InPhonex and CallCentric are two VoIP services that also support these codecs.

  2. I use efax.com for many years and love it!

Google other internet email fax sites.

  5. Sending a fax is really easy without using a telephone line, it's just like sending an email. Check out these how to guides http://www.myfax.com/tutorials.asp
