How can i send an SMS through PHP for free?

Hi,

For an project to help my schools webpage become more "interactive" I am building an script that sends parents / students updates of the school through SMS using PHP.

The only problem as I cannot find an decent script that doesnt use a "commercial" SMS gateway.

Can anyone give me an insight to this?

There is no legit free way to do this..theres a couple of scripts out-there that piggy-back existing commercial SMS networks but they are illegal so don't think the school would appreciate if you used them. The best thing to do is to contact one of the SMS networks regarding pricing to see if it is worthwhile.

Friends of mine actually wrote a script to do this using Perl (legit of course)...you can have a look at it here for ideas...

Try researching the SMS gateway called kannel. It is also the technology used by the social network katext.com
