I dont know about other messengers, but you can send IM to a mobile from Yahoo messenger in following methods

1. As a Text Message to a mobile number

2. As an IM if the person has "Signed into Mobile" using his Yahoo id.

The second one is pretty much like a normal Instant Message in Yahoo as his id would show "Im mobile" or something like that against his id.

For the first one you need the latest Yahoo Messenger (7.0 i think). Either u can click the "Send Text Message" icon and enter his mobile number and send a message or you can set that person's mobile number in his Contact Details (Mobile number). And then when you right click his id, it will show the option "Send Text Message" in the menu.

The person needs to be connected to the Internet and logged in on MSN or Yahoo Messenger or ICQ.  You can't send an instant message if they're offline.
