im doing a science project,how can i separate sand from soil?

im in 8th grade so i don't have a lot of accessible machines or anything

  2. Sifting is probably out of the question if the soil isn't absolutely dry and well-pulverized.

    I'd try separation by gravity in water.  Mix the soil with plenty of water, stir well and then let it sit.  The heavier grains will fall to the bottom first; that will include sand and gravel.  Smaller and lighter stuff will settle later or not at all.

    Skim off the fluid sludge (dump on top of more soil and let the water filter through to catch the soil bits), then scrape off the soil layer carefully.  The sand should be on the bottom.
