i want to learn to solve my rubik's cube to make my friends impressed.

This question has been asked QUITE OFTEN on Yahoo Answers. First, your best bet would be to RESEARCH those answers, best answer for each question probably has a good solution.

Now. There're various ways to solve a Rubik's Cube. A LOT. If you want to learn how to solve it while achieving times of sub-60 sec, I highly suggest Jasmine's Beginner Method. It's very simple to understand, but incorporates speed as well =]
