I am currently in a band and we are planning on doing some low-budget recording in my basement and i was wondering if anyone had some tips on how to make a small soundproofed area to actually do the recording in...it would only need to be as big of a space as for a drum set, like 5 feet by 5 feet or so

ive heard that egg shells or a perimeter of heavy curtains work, but any advice at all would be great

not sure about styrofoam either...isnt that bad to breathe in?

  1. Melamine foam is the stuff used by pros.

    See http://www.acousticalsurfaces.com/foam_s...

  2. egg cartons, cupholders from mcdonalds, bulliten board cork,

  3. i think fiberglass is the only solution,

for a cheap solution, try cheap plywoods

  4. youtube and expertvillage both have free instructional videos on this subject.

  5. if you really want to be ghetto with it, use a mattress. other wise just google "soundproof material"

  6. I was once in a rock band, of sorts, we lined the wall surfaces with inexpensive carpet remnants- the very nature of a soft, pliable carpet is vibration absorbing. It worked but it was also a lot of work-cut it in 16"X 24" strips and nail it to the studs every 4 or 5 inches as I recall, similar to roofing shingles, start at the bottom of the wall,of course-eventually you will have a muffled enclosure without which you would only offend the innocent and, of course, unworthy of your talents.Pay particular attention to windows because they may only be 1/16th of an inch thick and transmit your good vibrations all the more fervently, much to the consternation of your immediate and less than appreciative immediate tribe members. Good luck and raise h**l at 2 AM as if you were in the halls of Valhalla itself.
