Soak in alcohol based mouthwash?   Not sure about Listerine, as it contains acids, but ones like Scope shouldn't be too bad.

You could use hydrogen peroxide to clean it without damaging the retainer.

I have a retainer and my orthodontist gave me this cold water cleaner . it's called "ortho fresh", you pour half a cap full into a cup of cold water and leave it - it works so well - you only need to do it once a week. You can ask your ortho about it or call this number 18004776673 (found it on the back of the bottle). Good luck!
