Question:

How can i stop biting my nails FOR GOOD?

I bite my fingernails and the skin around them is red and sore. I've tried painting them and it worked for a little while, but i found i could just scratch it off, and i didn't seem to mind the taste too much anymore. I've found that nail polish remover, and it worked for a while as it tasted vile. eventually i found other things to chew on, mainly my hair and clothes. I felt it was better to go back to my nails rather than develop a hairball. Is it a nervous thing? why do i feel the need to keep chewing things? what can i do to stop biting my nails FOR GOOD?

Any hints will be appreciated.

  1. Well you could try what worked for me... I chewed my nails all my life, then in July, I got an infection in my right pinky and ended up in the ER on a sunday because I couldn't wait until Monday to call my doctor because it had gotten so bad that I couldn't take the pain any more... it has swollen to the size of my thumb and was actually hot, the infection I got was so bad that the doctor took xrays to make sure the infection hadn't gotten into the bone.

Iw as on mega anti-biotics for 10 days, lost my nail and the entire end of my finger peeled off from the last joint up...

The Doc also said if I had waited a couple more days I would have lost the tip of my finger.

That did it for me....Oh and the 1000.00+ bill hasn't even arrived yet.

  2. put something really hot or spicy under your nails and you you will burn your mouth everytime or you nut this nail polish that tastes really gross just for that =)

  3. I think it might be some nervous thing you might have. The next time you feel the urge to bite your nails or chew on something, try focusing on somethinge else. Such as, what you're going to do tomorrow, or just try doing something to distract yourself. There's this certain kind of nail polish that is made for people who bite their nails. It has a bitter taste to it, so when you bite your nails you can taste it and you'll stop biting your nails. If you start chewing on something else, maybe try something else that you can do, if you can't really get your mind on anything. You can ... tap your feet, or maybe playing with your tounge.

  4. im always bitting my nails the are so ugly.

i wear black nail polish it tastes so baaaad, so that way i dont bit my nals anymore ;)

or putting onion, garlic, chilli or bleach under your nails.

  5. Unless you want to go the hypnosis route, which some people swear by, you do have a couple options other than sheer willpower. One is to apply the very disgusting (and therefore, highly successful) nail biting cream like Control It!), which you paint onto your nails. It tastes so bitter you won’t dare bite them. A new product on the market which doesn't taste any better, but is definitely worth trying is Jessica 'Nibble No More,' a no-nail-biting polish with bitter cactus extract as its secret ingredient ($5 at http://www.jessicacosmetics.com).

Another option is to keep your nails painted. My friend swears a pricey manicure keeps her biting at bay & she suggests the brighter the color the better.

  6. My Freing always does that too !!!

You should put like chilly under your fingernails

and then wen you bite it youll be jumping up

    thatll work x

  7. try putting hot chilly so that it will teach you not to bite your nails. oh just when you have chilly in your hands don't touch your eyes otherwise you'll really be in trouble

  8. I did it by cutting them whenever more than a couple millimeters of white showed on the end. but i'm a guy. soo...

  9. seems like a bad habit but you can get acrylic nails... they are cute and its relaxing to get them done

  10. well my cousin used to have the same habit and her mom would paint her nails so if she would try to bite her nails she would eat the nail polish and then not want to bite her nails anymore.

  11. I finally put my nailbiting to bed when I started wearing gloves as often as possible, especially at home. It can be awkward at work but I explained that I had a slight allergy and needed to wear some of those thin rubber gloves for a couple of weeks. Good luck, once you break the cycle, you should be sorted for life...

  12. It sounds like you always have the need to chew something. Try chewing gum instead. :) I have trouble biting my nails as well. Stop 'n' Grow is also an option, it tastes rancid, and you can get it at a drugstore. Good luck!

  13. It's an oral fixation habit. It takes 28 days to break a habit. I would suggest you use all of the things that previously worked, with the addition of something to substitute for your fingernails. Drinking water (especially from a straw or a sports bottle), chewing a straw, gum, or a toothpick, worked for me. Over the objections of my dentist (LOL), I also like to chew on ice.

Painting your nails and working to get them medium length and lovely will provide a reason, and with the substitute of something else to keep your mouth busy, you should be free of your habit in 4 weeks.

  14. You can cut them very short that way you wont be able to bite them also you can use a rubber band and snap every time when you feel the need to bite your nails.

  15. I was a HORRIBLE nail bitter but I got over it.  I started growing my nails out and butting thick layers of nail polish on them.  It felt like a shame to  bite them off and the nail polish would flake off in my mouth and...ewww.  I havn't bitten my nails since

  16. I can think of two suggestions off the top of my head.

    1: remove your fingernails.

    2: remove your teeth.

Honestly, beyond these two suggestions it is simply a matter of self awareness and behaviour stopping.

Be aware of anything going near your mouth.  If it happens to be your fingers or something which isn't food, tell yourself to STOP!  If necessarry actually say it out loud.

Get into the habit of keeping your fingernails clipped short so that you don't have so much to bite if you fail to stop yourself from doing so.  Wearing gloves might help too.

    Best of luck.
