I need some surefire formula to tame notorious students in my class. they are 13 years old. when i entered the class today, 2 boys were fighting. They never bring text books when asked and lots other nerve wreaking behaviour that drive me up the wall.

  1. try reverse psychology. praise them for something they wrote. however trivial. motivate them. they need attention. give it to them till they settle down.

  2. Get stuck into them! Start handing out detentions like there's no tomorrow! Seat them away from their friends and at the front of the classroom, call on them first to answer questions and perhaps even notify their parents.

  3. expulsion..  again and again..

  4. Beat them like rented mules.

  5. Some ideas - use assigned seating; find out what other teachers who have these students do with them -- it may be that no one can control them.  If that's the case, then the administration should deal with them.  If not, you may find out what makes them tick from another teacher.  You are teaching a very difficult age group!  You have my respect!

  6. Get to know your students. I always find that when I have an issue with a kid, it stems from something outside of the classroom. Call the parents. Get them involved, but don't point fingers. Just get to know about home life, history, past situations. Find out how they work. If they are alpha males, make them role models and leaders in the classroom. Give them assigned tasks.

Most importantly, treat them like they matter. If you treat them like a problem, they will be just that. Kids know how to behave, but they also realize that getting negative attention is much easier than actually doing well.

  7. At this age they know right from wrong. Punishment. Make them stay afterschool for fighting not bringing there books. Talk to the principal that you need some help. some back up. Talk to the other teachers that these kids have and find out what they're doing.  I feel bad for your other students who arn't getting what they need because of these students. Call there parents in and let them know whats going on and that you want to work with them to straighten out this behavior.

  8. send them to the principal everytime.  Eventually the principal will have to take corrective action. (suspension, expulsion)
