we just moved into our new house and our neighbors are d**k heads, they both have big dogs (on both sides of us) and my two small dogs bark at them when they see them, the neighbors are insisting that our dogs start the barking which is dumb because all dogs bark, but we cant get evicted so i was wondering if you guys know of ANY WAYS to get our dogs to stop barking or bark less? i have one 6yr old jack russel and a 1yr old chihuahua/yorkie mix!

  1. Shock collar works like a charm, if you want you can put em on ya neigboors too

  2. You can get a device called a "barker breaker".  It emits a sound that dogs don't like when the bark.  It will work on your dog AND your neighbors too!

A google search shows there are lots of stores that sell it.  I had one for my neighbor's little yapper and it worked great.  The only problem is the one I bought was not waterproof and it died when it got wet.  I believe there is a waterproof model, but it's a bit expensive if I remember correctly.

  3. Please dont use shock collars i know they work but they are so mean! It's like if somebody didnt want you to talk, so they slapped you across the face! Worst of all you really really really want to keep talking. They dont know any better, so do what you can to teach them not to bark the non-violent way. IF you have to use the collar, though, that barker breaker sounds a little more humane, but not as humane as a "NO"

  4. OH gosh. Jack russels bark bark bark bark. I'd get a shocking collar. Just cuz'

  5. You are getting a lot of answers saying shock collars, smack them, yell no, etc.  The problem with these remedies is that you have to be there every moment of every day in order for them to work (weather or not these methods are mean or abusive could be debated for days so I will stay away from that).  First of all make sure your dogs are getting plenty of exercise and mental stimulation.  I have not been around chihuahua/yorkies much, but jacks are very smart and have a very high energy level.  If they don't get enough stimulation that can become mean, destructive, or in your case loud.

Besides getting them enough exercise I would purchase bark collars.  There are different types, they all are automatic when a dog barks.  Some send of a spray of citronella, some a high pitch nose that only the dog can hear and some, I believe, a shock.  The great thing is that they work weather you are there or not.  The down side is that most dogs are smart enough to know when they are wearing one or not so they will bark when they don't have the collar on.

I like to buy pet products from Valley Vet Supply or from Pet Edge.  Both have web sites so you can order online and they have the best prices.

  6. catch them in the act and smack them everytime they bark.

they will learn that barking hurts them and to not do it.

  7. you can get a shock collar, or just spray them with water, but shock collars work better

  8. Shocking collar?  Smacking when barking?  Please, please, do not use either of these methods.  Our little Shih Tzu was a barker also and I stopped her from barking with a really great method.

Simply get a soda can, (you may want to get one for each room or area you are in);put a few small stones in it, seal it with duct tape and when the dogs bark, shake the can and give them a firm "Stoppit" or other short command.  If the shaking of the can doesn't stop them from barking, then DROP the can forcefully to make the noise louder; but do not throw the can at the dogs.

In three days our Oreo was broke of this barking habit; and now even when someone rings the doorbell, she runs and starts to bark till I tell her I'm going to get the can, then she stops.

Why hurt your dogs when they are doing what comes naturally to them?  Like someone earlier said, how would you like to be slapped or zapped when you started yelling or talking?  Our 4 legged babies are a product of what we make of them...treat them with kindness and always received kindness and love in return.

    Good luck and God bless.

  9. If you are looking for a more cruelty free way of stopping the problem, there are collars that don't shock, but instead spray a lemon scent that the dog will dislike. This is only a lemon scent, it won't hurt them, or irritate their eyes.

I have this for my yorkshire terrier, works like a charm, and I don't feel bad in the least!
