I have two dogs both are pitt bull puppies there about 8 months old. we just moved in a new house and they are chewing the air condition wire on the unit. The landlord send the someone to fix the problem and that we would be charge 75.00 for the repair. that was the first time. the second it went out they were in the cage. it went back out. The same guys came back out and fix it again I told them they were lock up that time. The guys fix it and put a pipe on it so they could not do it again. so we let them out then last night or earlier they did it again this time it was not to bad I fix it . And had to lock them back in the cage which I hate doing. Why are they doing that and how can I stop them.

  1. Puppies do that because their baby teeth are growing and causes discomfort.  Just like when a baby's teeth are growing out and the baby uses a teething ring.  It soothes the pain.  When puppies get older, they stop chewing on things (except for bones).  Just as a baby gets older and stops teething :)  Try buying them plenty of chew toys, etc. and see if that helps :)

  2. Go to the small animal section at your local petsmart. They sell things designed for ferrets but you can use them for any animal really. They are plastic covers you put around electrical cords that have a bad tasting deterrent impregnated into the plastic. It is supposed to discourage chewing. It's defintely worth a shot. I found out about them when my puppy decided my laptop cord tasted good!

  3. All very good answers the others have given.... you can also try getting that stuff in a can that keeps them from going on or near the stuff they are chewing on.... I think it must make the wires (or what ever ) it is spayed on taste bad... then they will not chew on it.... My german shepard did the same thing with some extension cords... I sprayed this stuff on and she quite chewing on it!!

Sorry but I forgot the name of it, but I think you can go to the local pet shop and ask them for the stuff that keeps them from chewing on stuff and they will know what you are talking about!

Also with having 2 pits they need alot of exercise and love and attention. they need alot of room to run and play. At least for 2 to 3 hrs a day of good running room and playing!

  4. I would try apple bitter spray on the pipe and wires.  And buy them alot of stuff they can chew on, and praise them when they chew on the stuff they are supposed to chew on.  If they are doing it when your not home it could be they are bored and you should probably crate them.

  5. Try to get them interested in chew toys, as they may be teething. Also try spraying the unit with Bitter Apple (some dogs love it, but most hate the taste).

Another thing to try is taking them for long walks when you can. They may just be in need of some exercise. Pups tend to act out by chewing and/or through destructive behavior when they're not getting enough exercise.

  6. Why are they doing this?

    1.  They are puppies, young dogs are curious.

    2.  They are bored, give them more exercise so they won't be destructive.

    How can you stop it?

    1.  Fence off the ac unit and wires.

    2.  Keep your dogs on a leash outside or stay outside with them and monitor.

    3.  Start training your dogs as to what is appropriate and what isn't.  You catch them messing with the wires, you say a firm no and direct them to a chew toy.  Praise when they do well.
