  1. yes, go to my pc sells software for remote access

    among others

  2. If your machine is physically turned off, this is not possible.

There was a product once which was a powerbar with a modem connection -- made by Sophisticated circuits IIRC - that allowed you to call a modem by phone and switch on the powerbar.

  3. The only way I know of is to use Wake-On-Lan, if your computer is capable of it. You can enable that in BIOS if your computer isn't too old. It basically lets everything hibernate except the ethernet card, and when it receives a W-O-L signal (magic packet), it will initiate startup. You can find a free WOL GUI app @

    http://www.depicus.com/wake-on-lan/

You can even use the website itself to broadcast the "magic packet". The magic packet is broadcast your network's subnet address. This works fine if you're on the same network as long as the receiving computer has a static IP set, is set up to listen for magic packets, and have the appropriate port (7 or 9) opened on that computer's firewall and also forwarded on your router. The problem with doing it over the internet, is many (most) late model routers don't allow broadcasts from the internet to your local subnet address, for security reasons. This could possibly be addressed by buying a very expensive router that lets you configure all the ultra-geek settings yourself, or buying a regular old Linksys router (the right model of course) and replacing the standard firmware on the router with a different/free firmware such as DD-WRT, Tomato, OpenWRT... if that firmware will give you the capability. I think the FULL version of DD-WRT will allow it, but your router model has to be the exact model or you'll only be able to put the micro or mini DD-WRT on it:

    http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/dd-wrt/ha...

If you're able to accomplish all of this, then you can wake up your computer and log in via logmein or your favorite remote desktop protocol/program.

  4. First, you need a network card in the machine with the ability to WAKE ON LAN.  Next, you would need to ensure that your motherboard supports this feature.  Then you would need to enable the WAKE ON LAN feature in the BIOS.  Then you would need the small cable that goes from the NIC to the Motherboard.  Most onboard NICs don't support this feature.

Now that your hardware is setup, you would need to get into the habit of always using Stand By instead of shutting your computer off, or using Hibernate.  This would enable the computer to boot easily, and to respond to a WAKE ON LAN request.

Then you need remote software.  Your best option is to use Remote Desktop, which is a feature of Windows XP Pro.  It is possible to fool XP Home into thinking it is Pro, just for this purpose, but that is a complex issue, and involves a bit of work modifying your OS.  if you do not have XP Pro on the office machine, then you can use something like VNC (TightVNC, RealVNC, etc.).  It won't look as good as Remote Desktop, and it won't provide audio, but it will allow remote control.

  5. Yes, you have to find software that allows you to connect your 2 computer over the internet than you should be able to control your office computer from home.
