How can i take a pic of candle lite in dark?

i have a nikon d40 and have tried some settings but its not coming clear...

  1. The problem is the movement of the flame and the camera is not sure where to focus.  If you use manual focus- you are going to have the same problem- you will focus and when the flame flickers, it is going to move.  So this is going to call for a very high shutter speed  and as wide aperture as you can get.  I would start with the highest shutter speed and the widest aperture I could get then bracket down until you are satisfied.

    I set the camera on P mode just to see what it would do- got proper exposure but the candles are not sharp.

  3. use a tripod and experiment with the shutter speed and do not use a flash. if you do not have a tripod set the iso higher to help steady the camera.  

  4. Not clear sounds like camera movement.

    Set your camera on aperture priority and put it on a tripod .... then press the shutter release ..
