i've had my budgie for almost a year now, but can't seem to be able to tame him. whenever i put my hand near him he tries to bite it or steps away, afraid. hand-feeding isn't a problem, though. :) i really need help on this, because vet fees might be a little too much to pay, and his nails are too long. if i don't get him tame(on my finger) soon his nails will get too long, and he might get hurt!

  1. there is too much to tell you on basic training that will fit on this page. i would say get a book, research the internet.  some birds just are how they are not matter what you do. if you want his nails trimmed then take him to your local pet store in his cage. in my area me and some of my friends, that know how to groom, made house calls to people that didn't want to take their birds some where. that will cost you too, but see if some one does that where you live. they shouldn't be afraid of a tiny keet! any other q's, email me

  2. To hand tame your budgie, you need to get him used to you.  Offer him treats as you pass by his cage.  He will soon learn to enjoy your visits.  After that, get him used to your hand being in his cage.  Offer him treats (such as lettuce, apple, or parsley) by hand and let him eat some before pinning it up on the side of his cage.  After a few days of this, make him step up in order to reach his treat.  He should step up easily.

To keep his nails from getting too long, you can purchase a concrete or medicated perch at your local pet store.  These work really well and i recommend them.  If you clip your bird's nails, they might grow faster, forcing you to clip them more often.
