Question:

How can i tame my cockatiel?

i've had him about a month - my 16mo old named him "buh", so we call him "bob".

i've read that cockatiels are very social and gentle - not this guy! he's terrified of me. i tried twice a day at regular intervals to work with him but it was upsetting him so much i've stopped - i don't want him to hurt himself.

when i got him as a gift, his cage was totally empty - nothing but the perches. i bought him some toys - something to jingle, something with little mirrors, and something to climb around on - but he totally ignores them when he's not afraid of them (hissing, fluffing up his feathers, and attacking).

i'm giving him a pellet diet, as i read that the seed diet is not the best because the vitamin and mineral stuff is on the hull and they discard that, unlike other birds that actually eat it. he seems to like it, now that he's used to it, but even though i offer him cheerios and berries daily, he is still terrified and won't eat them unless i put them down.

he's not banded, either, if that means anything.

what do i do with this guy? it's breaking my heart seeing him just sitting there, day after day, but i don't feel comfortable letting him out to fly around while he's not hand-tamed.

  1. check out http://www.parrotcentral.net/how_to_tame... for a great guide on how to tame a bird, thats what i did and now mine is bonded to me, some birds just dont play with toys, they dont find them interesting    goodluck

  2. Mine hated its cage and you probably would want to hand tame it and let it out.  You might want to start doing that in a small room without windows or mirrors and where you can get to the bird.  They are not long distance fliers so they wear out quickly if it does want to fly.

  3. Take Time and talk to him Give him more toys
