    only joking. just relate to something they like (movies,sports,video games)

  3. get some drum roll/tension music like on quizz programmes like who wants to be a millionaire and hold a min quiz at the end of each lesson.

    We used to have times table timed competitions with a leader board each week.  One child with the stop watch out at the front of the class and invite kids to come and see how fast they can recite a set of tables.  Make it clear that you will only invite those that have been attentive to the lesson and behaved apropriately.

    Sometimes something simple like passing out a pack of new pencils that are diferent to the ones usually used or giving coloured worksheets can make then keener to get to work.

    Make things as real as posible.  A lot of kids are switched off to maths because they think they don't need to learn it, so if math problems are based around working out how many cokes you'd have to order for a party or how many metres a mountain bike would have travled makes it seem more worth learning plus easier to viualise.
