  1. Treats are definitely the answer!  I trained my dog by setting up a pen in the backyard, leading her to it after coming out of her kennel or after eating, and rewarding her after she makes her P's and Q's.

  2. What do you mean "number two"?

  3. when we got a lab puppy 3 years ago we designated a small corner of our back yard and put one of those yellow spikes there, and then led the dog there each time.

It worked!  At least temporarily.  Fairly quickly the dog was going there 90% of the time.  But little by little she expanded her "zone" until it comprised the entired barked area of our back yard.

i got the impression that our efforts were doomed from the beginning.  A couple things that might have made a difference: 1) if we would have cleaned up that area more diligently - it's possible she just didn't want to tromp around there if it wasn't cleaned up... and 2) the area is in the far back corner of the yard and I got the impression that she preferrred something closer - especially when it was wet and rainy out.

Those things might help but personally I'm skeptical that dogs can be taught to stay within one small area.  But, good luck!

  4. That big yellow spike that she is talking about is for peeing.. it has nothing to do with p**p and it isn't just yellow... it reeks of dog pee. If you want your dog to go in one spot, it's quite simple... take him or her out on a lead and to the spot where you want him or her to go.... when he/she poops... give the dog a treat and praise like crazy. Do this a few times and the dog should get it.

  5. I have seen these things in the pet store and basically they are

a yellow plastic spike that you put in the ground and then everytime the dog wants to go out you lead him/her to that spot. You could probably just make something and paint it yellow. I think yellow is a colour that dogs can actually see.
