  1. Your ability to teach and his ability to learn.  Has he been reading all along, or just getting a cram course.  Does he know hooked on phonics?  I don't know how you teach a 6 year old to read a book in a week if they don't already know how to read.  If you mean learn all of the content in the book, then drill him a couple hours a day until he knows it by heart.  If it is a book that is also on DVD, show that over and over also, until the information is down pat.  Good luck.

  2. That very much depends on what he already knows.  If he is on the verge of reading, then you may not have to do much more than to read to him.  My nephews would start out with me reading to them, then they would start to take over, or they would point at words and ask me what that word said.   If he has had no experience with books, then you can't teach him in a week.

  3. you cant it would at least take a year

  4. Repetition, repetition, repetition.  But also be sure to make it a fun and enjoyable experience.  He will be much more motivated to learn that way.  Perhaps make a game out of it.

  5. First you read the book to him then let him try and you help him sound out the words. help him sound it out until he is ready to read it on his own. Remember don't get frusterated with him. and i dono what book you're talking abouyt but if he has trouble with more that 5 words it's to hard if he has trouble with2-3 words it's perfect

    Phonics, Phonics, Phonics!

Phonics versus whole language is a long running debate in the education world.  First it was phonics, then whole language, and now it has gone back to phonics.  Why?  Well, whole language (or the idea of sight reading) simply wasn't helping kids to learn how to read.  Phonics on the other hand, teaches kids how to sound out words, and lets the use those sounds to create a whole word.  Sounds like ph sound the same in a number of words, such as phone or even phonics, so all the child has to do is learn what each sound is and then put them together to create a word.

As a teacher, I am wholeheartedly in favor of phonics, and as a nanny who babysits a six year old learning to read with phonics, I am amazed at how quickly he is picking up on words.

Below is an article describing in more detail what phonics is:http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/articl...

And here are some activities that you can work on with your nephew.
