It is fairly easy to tell whether your little scaly friend is a HE or a SHE. However, you'll only be able to find out when they're in breeding condition (after a slow change of temperature);

Males: Will have white bumps over their gill covers. They look a bit like salt grains.

Will also have a a**s that does not stick out, but curves in.

Females: Will be fatter on the left side (so will NOT be symmetrical when seen from above).

Will have an a**s that sticks out a little.

It's really not easy to tell.  The males will get white tubercules around the gills when they are ready to mate but they need to be mature (about 3 yrs old) before that will show.

well when spawning the male will develope white tubercules (white pimples on his gills) and so when breeding the male will chase the female and then after weeks and months the female will have a large tummy.
