  1. The first symptom, or subjective sign, of breast cancer is typically a lump that feels different than the surrounding breast tissue. According to the Merck Manual, greater than 80% of breast cancer cases are discovered as a lump by the woman herself. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), the first medical sign, or objective indication of breast cancer as detected by a physician, is discovered by mammogram.

Indications of breast cancer other than a lump may include changes in breast size or shape, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or spontaneous single-nipple discharge. Pain is an unreliable tool in determining the presence of breast cancer, but may be indicative of other breast-related health issues such as mastodynia.

When breast cancer cells invade the dermal lymphatics, small lymph vessels in the skin of the breast, its presentation can resemble skin inflammation and thus is known as inflammatory breast cancer (IBC). Symptoms of inflammatory breast cancer include pain, swelling, warmth and redness throughout the breast, as well as an orange peel texture to the skin referred to as peau d’orange.

Another reported symptom complex of breast cancer is Paget’s disease of the breast. This syndrome presents as eczematoid skin changes such as redness and mild flaking of the nipple skin. As Paget’s advances, symptoms may include tingling, itching, increased sensitivity, burning, and pain. There may also be discharge from the nipple. Approximately half of women diagnosed with Paget’s also have a lump in the breast.

Occasionally, breast cancer presents as metastatic disease, that is, cancer that has spread beyond the original organ. Metastatic breast cancer will cause symptoms that depend on the location of metastasis. More common sites of metastasis include bone, liver, lung and brain. Unexplained weight loss can occasionally herald an occult breast cancer, as can symptoms of fevers or chills. Bone or joint pains can sometimes be manifestations of metastatic breast cancer, as can jaundice or neurological symptoms. These symptoms are “non-specific,” meaning they can also be manifestations of many other illnesses.

Most symptoms of breast disorder do not turn out to represent underlying breast cancer. Benign breast diseases such as mastitis and fibroadenoma of the breast are more common causes of breast disorder symptoms. The appearance of a new symptom should be taken seriously by both patients and their doctors, because of the possibility of an underlying breast cancer at almost any age.

  2. you can't tell until you see a doctor.

breast cancer runs in my family and none of them had pain. just the lump.

if you are concerned, see your doctor.

you can get breast pain with hormone changes in your body. i did. it went away as fast as it came.

    please don't worry too much.

  3. Have you done a self breast examination?  Do you know how?  Call your doctor and see about getting in for a mammogram.

  4. You can't tell, you need to get checked by your Dr.  You should go ASAP in case it's something bad they can detect it immediately.

  5. You can't tell if you have breast cancer. Even doctors can't tell until the appropriate tests have been done on someone with symptoms of breast cancer.

Pain isn't usually a sign of breast cancer, especially with no other symptoms. And breast cancer is rare in women under 40 (though of course far from unknown).

See your doctor about the pain; if s/he finds any cause for concern s/he will refer you for tests.

  6. It is unlikely to be breast cancer if you are feeling pain, that is not a typical symptom.  But you should not be experiencing pain, so something is amiss! Visit your doctor for a check-up...

  7. Breast cancer has few warning signs and pain is rarely a symptom of the disease.  Breast pain is more commonly associated with non-cancerous changes than with cancerous changes to the breast tissue. Equal discomfort in both b*****s is most commonly benign. But new and persistent discomfort in only one breast may be of concern, particularly if it's getting worse, not better.

You need to ask your doctor about this.  If he or she feels there is a reason for concern, then can order a mammogram for you.

  8. Dani is right.  A proper physical examination by an M.D. is far more reliable than self-examination.  As Joseph said, it's probably something else because pain isn't a typical early symptom of cancer, but nevertheless it's a sign that there's something wrong and you should see your doctor ASAP.

  9. The things that can indicate breast cancer include:

A lump anywhere in the breats(s),

    A discharge from the nipple,

A change in the shape/appearance of the nipple.

Any of these should make a lady see a doctor immediately.

If you are sure you don't have ANY of these, then its highly unlikely that you have a breast cancer.

Breast pain can be part of a number of diseases. Generally, it is a fairly common thing, esp. in young women. It usually shows changes in intensity with the monthly cycle. If the pain is bad and is affecting your daily routine, go see a doctor who will prescribe a pain-reliever for this kind of pain.
