  1. Does it look new?  Did it still have the plastic covers on it?  Was all accessories included?  Where those accessories sealed or opened?

You'll have to send it to Canon to see if it has been used before.  I checked a file in Opanda IExif, but the G9 doesn't write shutter actuations to the file.

As for continuous file numbering, that is really unreliable.  Your first image may be IMG_0001, but the person could have reset it and changed it back to continuous.  Also, the numbering can pick up on the numbering if existing files are on a card.

  2. I'm guessing you got it from eBay or an online dealer?

Canon can number pictures consecutively.  To check that, go to Menu, and the second tab (with the tools on it), and scroll down to "File Numbering".  If it says "Continuous", then it'll start at "IMG_0001" and goes up from there.  "Auto Reset", I believe, resets every time you clear the memory card.  If you're on "Continuous", and didn't start at "IMG_0001", then it's been used.  If it's on "Auto Reset", then who knows.

You could call Canon and see when your particular serial number was produced.  Other than that, only sending it into Canon will tell you.
