First of all, yes i know, a rabbit isn't a rodent, but i just like it here okay? :P

I want to get my male rabbit Hershey a spayed female friend. I have read on numerous sites that introduction is so much easier with 2 altered bunnies. It costs $130 to neuter him and i doubt i can get my mom to pay that much. He does act very docile, doesn't spray, and i think there may be a possibility he already is neutered. Is there a way i could tell? And if he isn't can he and a spayed female still go together?

  1. It's very unlikely that he is neutered unless you adopted him through a rabbit rescue or an SPCA with a spay/neuter program.  Having a vet check him over would be the best way to tell because it can be tricky on rabbits.  Their testicles can move between the abdomen and the s*****m, particularly when they are nervous.  So, it's not as straight forward as it is on an adult rodent.  However, you should be able to see a p***s either way.

Just a note though, if your mom isn't likely to pay $130 for a rabbit neuter then how are you going to have the female spayed?  It is very important that the female be spayed because they are at a very, very, very high risk of developing cancers and infections of their reproductive organs.  Please make sure you either adopt an already spayed female, or else wait to get another rabbit until you've saved enough for the surgery.  A spay will be more expensive than a neuter.

Edit to respond to your additional info:  Don't feel bad, like I said sometimes they retract their testicles when they're nervous.  So, sometimes they're there and sometimes not :-)

He might be able to get along with a spayed female but there's no way to say for sure.  It's easier to bond two rabbits that have been altered because there are less hormonal urges and they are just generally calmer.  He might spend a lot of time harassing the female though because he would still feel a strong desire to mate.

  2. Well does he have nuts down below? An easy pointer. Or if you're still confused after checking it out take him to the vet, they'll be able to tell you in no time if he's fixed or not. Since you would probably only have to ask a nurse you may not have to pay for that visit.

  3. Does he have man parts? if so he's not neutered....
