How can i tell if my tree is dying

I have a big holly tree in my garden unfortunatly it is protected. But the bark at the base is peeling off is it dying (hope so)

  1. Hi - if it is a protected tree (or in a conservation area) call your local Tree Officer/Warden at the Council and ask them to take a look.  They should come out for free and tell you exactly what is happening.  If the bark is peeling it could be squirrel damage or a fungal disease.  If it has gone more than half-way around the trunk then the tree is ring-barked and likely to die so it would be safer to have it removed and the stump poisoned.  Good luck :-)
