  1. as in all members of the kingdom animalia, the male has a p***s and the female has a v****a.

  2. Sexing chicks by wing feathers is hit or miss, particularly with some types of bantams.  We raise silkies, and any type of sexing before their secondary feathers are almost complete is nearly impossible.

If you are ordering chicks from the hatchery, request a sexed order instead of a straight run.  This is pretty much the only guarantee that you'll be receiving hens only.

There are a couple of varieties of poultry that are s*x-linked (male and female chicks are different colors), but I don't know of any bantams that are s*x-linked, so I don't think that will help in this instance.

On the bright side, if you do end up with any roosters, you can always sell them or give them away.  Bantams are too small to bother eating, though.

  3. Well if they are only a couple of days old, you can wing s*x them.

Look under there wings. You will see the little rows of feathers starting to grow.

Females will have short and long rows of feathers, Males will have only long rows of feathers.

If they are older than that you will have to wait until they are 4 onths old to tell for sure. At that age you feel there bone between the legs, if it wide, then its a pullet or a hen because it can lay an egg through that larger space. If its close together its a cockerel or a rooster. Pullets are young female chcikens. Cockerels are young roosters.

  4. My Dad has hens and the only way he can tell if any chicks are hens is to wait until they are a few months old and he can tell by their shorter feathery tails (than cockerels) or if they have a small red head bit (don't know what it's called)

  5. Well, for those like Adam D, his 9th grade biology failed him for all chickens have a 'vent'.

It's hard to s*x them properly, what we do (we only want the hens too) is to let them all grow up and then knock off the c***s for meat.

  6. As Beth said, if the chicks are between 24-48 hours old they can be sexed by looking at the feathers on the wings.  I have used this technique before.
