Some mobile phones have built-in wifi (like the Nokia E65, N95, etc).  Turn on your mobile phone instead?

As well as using an independent Wi-Fi finder, or even your phone, some laptops have a light that would flash if it sees a network, or something similar!

There are some independent electronic devices out there that can also sniff out wifi, but I don't know why you wouldn't just use your laptop. Wardriving is perfectly safe and legal.
