  1. www.ancestry.com and find a Mormon to help you.

  2. It can be difficult.  For instance, how far back do you want to go, and on what continent?

European records rarely go as far back as to the 1600s, but that is about the limit.

Many people either fled their country or town, never to return, or as civilians or soldiers were killed in wars with no record!  Some people permanently change their names without official record!

The most complete listing of geneological records supposedly is the Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormons), who collect geneological data because their theism claims that even the graves of the dead can be baptised and the deceased's soul can thus be brought into their church after death!  So, supposedly, they keep the best geneological records in our nation!  I do not want to be a Mormon, so I hope nobody does that to me after I'm dead!  I am strictly a non-theist, which means I do not accept the falacy of the existence of any god.

You can often access US Census records at a very good library.  I do not live in Saint Louis anymore, but their geneological research room in their downtown (Central) library is ideal!  I found complete searches under my surname (Kinum).

There are also bankruptcy records.  Believe it or not, bankruptcies have NO statute of limitations, if ANYONE in your family has declared bankruptcy, it is in the records!  I have an ancestor whose record of bankruptcy in the 1920s is in the US bankruptcy record book in the Las Vegas Nevada, Boise Idaho, Saint Louis Missouri, and Iowa City Iowa public libraries!!!

Most geneological societies require you to buy a membership to get accurate information.  Some of these cost "only" $50, some cost in the hundreds.  I do not know how good they are, since I stayed away from them!

    Good luck.

  3. try this web site www.ancestry.ca  if you are canadian if not then try ancestry.com

  4. http://genealogy.about.com/cs/beginnersc...

online sorces lilke ancestry.com work about 70% of the time but they are not full proof espicaly if you have any relitives that came  over illigialy

  5. INVESTIGATE - Have a look at previous questions that are similar. But generally, sign up to a family tree hosting site, (I chose www.genesreunited.co.uk - or .com if you're in the USA - I find it easier to navigate through) and record what you already know.

READ - Buy a book on genealogy. You should be able to find a selection at your local book shop. I chose an all-rounder, and it's proven to be indespensable. I couldn't have managed without it.

SOFTWARE - I also shopped on Amazon for a cheapy family tree maker software pack. I think it cost me about £5 ($10), and it allows you to record even more information, as well as photos and everything else you could want. It stores it all offline, so you don't have to connect to the net all the time. You can also send your file to others that have the software, and look at other people's trees from your own PC. I downloaded my software to my family's computers, and I send them a copy of the tree every so often to update them.

FINANCES - One thing to bear in mind though, is that you won't get very far unless you're willing to spend some money. People are trying to do it all for free, which just isn't viable. There are a few sites that are free, but to get certificates and things, you will have to pay. The costs aren't huge. The good thing is that history isn't going anywhere, and you can pick it up again when you have a little spare cash. I think most people hold off their research around Christmas, because they're broke, but you canjust get back into it in Jan.

THE RESULT - Above all, doing your family tree gives you a great sense of who you are and where you've come from. And every time you find a new relative, you get a buzz! Make sure to come back and tell your story to us here!
