  1. You didn't say whether you own the ship you're tracking, or if you're trying to track ships in general. Regardless, you will have to install at least some equipment on the ship. On land, there are a variety of cellphone-based tracking systems. However, for ocean-going vessels, you need to communicate position data with satellites with global coverage, and the satellites have to relay that information back to a centralized distribution center.

    This would essentially use whatever gps you already have, but you would still have to have some form of longrange comms and at the very least email.
