How can i train for a swimming season?

i used to be on a competitive swim team with intense workouts. in a month or so, i am starting swimming for my high school team. i am REALLY out of shape and i don't know how to get back to what i used to be. i would like to start training for the season, but how much dryland and swimming should i be doing daily? should i even be doing dryland and swimming daily?

  1. If you want to do dryland work focus mostly on working your core. Do lots of sit-ups, crunches, and other ab exercises. You might also try doing some Pilates. You can look up some moves online, but Pilates workout DVDs aren't a bad invesment.

    As for the swimming go slow at first. Do a lot of drilling and technique work. When you start adding in more distance keep it all at a low aerobic level with lots of rest between sets (though you can go a fair distance without stopping).

    Our trainer suggested that over the summer (when we're all out of shape) we start by doing just a 500, then add a couple hundred yards every workout.

    Also, if you're just looking to get in shape right now and you aren't worried about speed you don't need to workout everyday. Start with 3 times a week and work up to 4 or 5 times a week. I also like to do my dryland workout every other day.
