  1. If there's no USB port on your camcorder then you've either got a one that uses firewire, a mini-DVD camcorder, or an old analog camcorder.

Look for MiniDV or Digital8 on the camcorder - they transfer the video via firewire.  If your PC hasn't already got a firewire card you'll need to install one - they're cheap, readily available and easy to install.  You can capture the video with Windows Movie Maker or invest in a commercial editor.

It should be fairly obvious if you've got a mini-DVD camcorder.  You need to finalise the disk in the camcorder and then you can copy the files to your PC with a commercial editor (WMM can't handle DVDs).  If you just want to play them from your hard drive you can rip the DVD with something like DVDDecrypter.

Things get complicated if you've got an analog camcorder!  If you've got access to another camcorder it may have a pass though feature.  This will convert the analog signal to a digital one which can be transferred via firewire.  You can use a TV capture card, but the quality will probably be very low.  The Pinnacle Dazzle and Kworld DVD Maker USB are relatively cheap external devices that plug into the camcorder and a USB port on your PC.  The Kworld is cheaper and I'm told it gives good results.  If you want the best quality, have a look at the Canopus ADVC range of analog / digital converters.

  2. If you have like me the old analog cassette type video camera you need to purchase at least a USB to phono connector

you may also need a video capture card in the computer

  3. Memory card??

I have a memory card reader which i plug into the usb  ports in my laptop and get my videos and pictures through that x

  4. Does it record to tape, dvd or hard drive?  If it uses DVDs, just put the DVD in your DVD drive and rip it.

  5. Via a memory card in the camera.

If it is an older camera which doesnt use this (ie. video tapes instead) then you will need to get a video signal adapter for your pc and play it from the camera while the pc records
