  1. Don't stress- I had to transport two bratty cats from Indiana to Georgia a month ago. Just but "feliway" spray. I swear by it! There's an identical product called "comfort zone" that works just the same. It's used when cats are boarding, traveling, moving to a new home or in any potentially stressful situation. It can also be used for undesirable behavior. It worked great for me and I bet it will do the same for you. It costs between fifteen and thirty dollars. In my experience driving is the best way to transport them (in the carriers, of course) Good luck and be safe!

  2. Hi Mandi...if it is at all possible, driving rom California to Colorado is the least stressful for your cat.  The reason is that your cat is around a familiar face and voice which will minimize the stress from the move.  Here's an answer I provided to help someone prepare their cat for a cross-country drive with their cats: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

If driving isn't an option there are airlines who do allow cats to fly in-cabin so long as you are with the cat when you travel.  Every airline has different pet transport policies so you would need to contact several to find out their policies as well as rates.  Please do bear in mind that all airlines will require a veterinary signed health certificate to establish the fact your cat is healthy to travel and is up to date with vaccinations.  http://www.avma.org/careforanimals/anima...

Greyhound and Amtrak do not allow pet animals unless they are service animals.

  3. Are you taking the cat or shipping it?

If you're going then driving is probably the easiest.  You can fly with him too but it will cost extra.  You can bring them into the cabin for most airlines or put them with the luggage (not ideal, they will be treated like luggage).  You'll have to contact the airlines in advance to make the reservation.  The fees vary but should be found on each airlines' website.  Most will also require a certificate from the vet saying that the cat is up to date on shots and healthy enough to travel.

You'll also have to take the cat out of the carrier to get through security and will need a soft-sided carrier if taking the cat in the cabin.

I'd just drive with the cat.  It's a nuisance but I don't think there is a good way to travel with a cat.  Sedating is an option but can be dangerous, especially at airline level altitude. And it doesn't seem to help all the time anyway.

I've driven frequently with two of mine.  They don't like it but they settle down once they know we're past the vet.  I flew with them from Florida to California - that was just too much of a drive.

But I don't have any experience with just shipping them if that's what you're asking about.  If you ship the cat in a plane you'll still need the info from the vet and the cat will go with the luggage.  If the weather is very hot they may not allow the cat to go, so getting him on a evening/night flight would probably be better.

  4. How are you getting there?  The cats can go the same way, but in a carrier.  Do not let them loose in a car - in some states it is illegal and up to a $500 fine.

If you are sending them somewhere without you - check airlines and trains.  Also check with the mainecoonrescue.com or the appropriate breed rescue - they set up caravans to shuttle new fosters and adoptees to their new homes.
