  1. You need a radio capable of picking up aviation voice frequencies... 108 to 136 Mhz.  In the USA you don't need a license to operate a receiver or scanner, but it is illegal to transmit on those frequencies without a license.

  2. it is much easier than that - if you just want to hear what they say, you can listen to it streaming on the internet for some towers.

    try www.liveatc.net

if you are near an airport and want to hear them, you can pick up a receiver at radio shack, or got to sportys.com - you can call the airport for the local frequency, or look it up on the internet (arinav site)

they use lots of 'lingo' - it helps to have a chart of your local area, so you know what/where they are talking about.  you can probably get a free expired one from a local pilot, or buy one for $5 at the local airport shop (where they also give lessons)

  3. Buy a scanner, get the frequencies from instrument approach procedure charts, airport/facility directories, and enroute charts, and tune in.

  4. well as long as you are not planning ot interfere then go with the answer above but if you are then dont bother because it is incredibly illegal to interfere with ariel broadcasts.

  5. The best way if you just want to listen is to go somewhere like Radio Shack or some other electronics store, buy a scanner. Not all scanners can pick up aviation frequencies though, so make sure it receives 118.000 MHz - 135.975 MHz. That's the frequency range that Air Traffic Control communication is on. By getting a scanner you won't have to worry about interfering with communication, because scanners are receive only. You can look up airports and get their local frequencies on www.airnav.com

  6. You will need a VHF radio with an adjustable frequency capability

    UHF for military

    Emergency frequencies are harmonic

    VHF  -  121.5

    UHF  -   243.0
