  1. Tabs are nice and easy ways of reading music for the guitar. The strings on the guitar are numbered - from highest to lowest - as 1-6 (e.g., high E=1, B=2, G=3, D=4, A=5, low E=6).

On the tabs, the high E is the top line. The numbers on the lines show where to put your fingers. The number is the fret that you put your finger behind (so for a 1, put your finger on the space behind the first fret). If a line has a 0, then it is an open string. If it has no markings, don't play that string.

I don't actually play the regular guitar (I'm a bassist!), so I don't know any easy songs. Try going to your local music store and picking up a lesson book. That will help you out a lot.

I hope this was helpful, and good luck!

  2. Think of the line of the tab if it is number tabs as strings on the guitar  and you see them the same way as looking down on your guitar. The numbers tell you which fret to press down on

  3. These links will explain how to read tabs.

  4. Well, tabs include two things, numbers and things like bars, isn't it ?

Well, numbers are the numbers of the space between the frets in the neck of your guitar. You can help your self by downloading GuitarPro 5 (a program which helps you further)

displays to you a mirror to your hand so that you follow it.

Now, let's deal with the "bars". Actually, they are the rhythmic division, needless to explain it to you here cos it will take us one year :) and necessitates directs assistance.

However, it's so easy to learn it, here is an advice:

    1. Do you know the song "eye of the tiger" ? (used in Stalone's film Rocky)

    2. it's based on a simple pattern

    3. obtain it's .mp3 version, and listen to it carefully

    4. obtain the tab.

    5. follow the tab and concentrate on what you heard.

    6. now see what?, a correlation between what you see (tab)  & what you hear (mp3).

i could give you further information, but since you have no teacher, it's preferable for you to use the discovery process :)

I hope this will help you a bit, you can contact me and i'll supply you with the info you want :).

    Best of luck.

  5. I am going to give you a basic introduction to tabs and then provide you with some songs I learned as well as where to find tabs.

    D|------------------|

    A|----0----3-------|

    E|-1----------------|

Here is a tab that I just made up. You strum the notes from left to right. So, our first note from left to right is '1'. To play this note, strum the E (thickest and closest string to the ceiling) while pressing your finger on the 1st fret.

The next note is a 0 on the A string. This simply means you strum the A string without having a finger on any fret.

Staying on the A string, strum again but this time with your finger on the 3rd fret. Make sense?

When pressing a finger on a fret, you don't want your finger on the actual strip of metal but directly above it.

One disadvantage to tabs is you do not know when to strum, or what finger to use for the frets. You will have to listen to the song or get Guitar Pro.

Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple (view in Courier New)

    e|-------------------------|

    B|-------------------------|

    G|-------------------------|

    D|-------------------------|

    A|-0-3-5-0-3-6\5-0-3-5-3-0-|

    E|-------------------------|

This song is the first one I learned. Looks difficult but is very easy once you get the hang of it. I use my pointer finger and pinky for this tab.

All of these notes take place on the A string.

    Open Strum (no frets)

    Strum 3rd fret (pointer finger)

    Strum 5th fret (pinky finger)

    Open Strum (no frets)

    Strum 3rd fret (pointer finger)

Strum 6th fret..without taking your pinky off of the fret, slide from the 6th fret up to the fifth fret.

    Open Strum (no frets)

    Strum 3rd fret (pointer finger)

    Strum 5th fret (pinky finger)

    Strum 3rd fret (pointer finger)

    Open Strum (no frets)

Keep trying until you get the hang of it. It will be helpful to listen to the song so you know what tempo to strum

I've been playing guitar for about 3 weeks or so... So I have been using some easy riffs to play. I will share with you some of the ones Here is a list, then I will supply tabs to certain ones... For the ones I don't have tabbed, you can go to http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ to find the tabs.

(From easiest to hardest in my opinion)

    Smoke on the Water-Deep Purple

    Hang on Sloopy-The McCoys

    Seven Nation Army-The White Stripes

    Never Too Late-Three Days Grace

    Day Tripper-The Beatles

    Walk This Way-Aerosmith

To view these tabs...copy and paste them into something like word or notepad and change the font to "Courier New"

In order to get the beats down, you'll probably have to listen to the song or get Guitar Pro which plays tabs in which you can get from http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/

  6. Why do you people always want to run before you learn how to walk?

HIRE A TEACHER... and LEARN HOW TO READ MUSIC and forget those TABs... At your stage of learning, it takes NO MORE EFFORT to learn how to read REAL music and it will pay dividends later.

HIRE A TEACHER and get your learning off correctly and you will be happy you did.
