  1. You don't mention which camera you have, or which Mac OS, but there are a few basic maintenance things you can try.

First off, open disk utility ( Applications folder>Utilities folder>Disk Utility), and repair permissions on your boot drive.

Reboot and try mounting the camera again.

Make sure the batteries are new or fully charged.

If none of this works, get a card reader that will read the media in your camera, and connect the card to your computer that way. It will mount as a removable drive and iPhoto should recognize it.

You can find an inexpensive card reader at  http://www.supermediastore.com/

  2. Using iPhoto and a USB cable.

just plug it in and iPhoto will automatically start, and ask you if you want to upload the pix, after you're done it'll ask you if you ant to keep the originals or delete them.

If it doesn't work, try a different cable or a card reader.

  3. One of the things that iPhoto sometimes looks for is for the camera to be on and in preview mode.  I'm not sure on your camera, but try connecting it then.  iPhoto should start automatically.  If it doesn't the camera should still load in iPhoto if you open it manually.
