  1. by behaving in a sustainable manner

don`t over kill ,over fish or disrupt eco systems .leaving things operative as they are.

    For a more civilized solution

Check in to Permaculture a very condensed form of agro forestry

So not only indigenous people can  on what forests produce

    this is indigenous

and they have been surviving on forest agriculture for a thousand years

As did most of Central and south American ancient civilizations for a large part of their agriculture

But to what degree do you mean indigenous

Aboriginal tribes have and still are surviving on what the forest has to offer.

A great range of Vines with fruits, edible roots, edible plants ,many insect species, mushrooms ,animals .fish

The south African bush men even survive in Arid lands which has only a fraction to offer .

the South and central American forest must be the richest in the world with the immense variety of food plants ,

I believe that this is left overs from earlier civilizations

European and African forests are meager in comparison.

  2. By management & defense and liveing off the land and using whats avalibale to them

  3. Three interlocking things to do:

Taking care of the area.  Making sure there is sufficient habitat for local native animals.  Establishing an environmentally friendly tourist centre.
